Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR)

Pioneered by Dr. Gregory A. Dumanian, TMR is a procedure originally developed to help amputees control their upper limb prosthetics using natural muscle movement. Improvement of pain revealed itself as an unexpected benefit. Amputated sensory nerves are attached to nearby motor nerves, as demonstrated in the image above. This gives the sensory nerve somewhere to go and something to do, reducing its likelihood of forming a painful neuroma
